Taxidermy Hall – Cinematic Stewardess.

Ahh back once again! Today’s tasty morsel of sonic discovery comes from a New Zealand dude (by way of New York and Melbourne) Rob Dickens, better known as Taxidermy Hall. Now, even though he is technically a Kiwi, in true Australian tradition I’m claiming this guy as an Aussie and including him on this blog. Now that we have sorted that we can address the giant taxidermy elephant in the room being this track, and how you need to wrap your ear balls around it asap.

There are some lovely laid back vibes on this tune, something about it reminds me of Summer and Autumn at the same time.  Dickens’ vocal style has an understated melancholy that works with the warm and organic tones and spacy guitar to create a very alluring sound. The subtle synth sounds and dreamy backing vocals punctuate the track and add just enough to lift the chorus. Every element of the track seems to blend together sonically and melodically to create a seamless wave of sound.

Germinate announcement

I have done a little More tweaking to the vocals to make them sound a little more interesting. I am happy with this finished product.

Here is a time lapse of me making these changes and mastering the finished product. The mastering was rather quick as i already had the right settings from the previous bounce.

Getting there.

Here is the latest version of the Germinate Announcement. I have been getting feedback from the crew and making a few adjustments. We felt that a female voice over would suit the brand , I wanted the voice to be clear but to sound like a young person. I think it was important to strike  a balance between a voice that sounds professional and a voice that people at gigs can relate to. I have also done some mastering using a multi-band compressor on this version so it sounds much louder and clearer. Find out more about using multi-band Compressors with Audiotuts they can make a big difference.

Website Updates

The website is starting to come together and the latest previews look great , the front page currently has the phrase sun powered sound on it. I have been thinking about what the voice over for the sonic logo should say and i like the simplicity of sun powered sound, it is simple and memorable.

Work in Progress

Here is a work in progress for the Germinate announcement. Please note that this has not been mastered and that there is still a voice over to add in. The idea is that the sun is rising the germinate rig is powering up and playing music for everyone to enjoy. I also tried to work in the feel of being at a concert or festival.

Work in progress: Timelapse

Here is a time lapse video  (made using Gawker)

The video shows me working on the project , you can see how many layers i have added to try and achieve a unique full sounding sonic logo. I am adjusting all the levels using automation to create some movement, you can also see me using equalization and various effects to try and achieve a well balanced sound. In this video i was trying to recreate the sound of sun rise so you can see me looking for some inspiration.  You might also notice me sourcing some sounds from Freesound.org and Stephan Schutze’s sound library
